The share of cars, by fuel type
Each point is one register snapshot. The first point is the December 2021 register, the last is the end of June 2026. Between those two dates the register was published at year-end only, so the line between points is a straight line, not a trend.
The numbers behind the chart
Cars only, as registered at each date. Vans, motorcycles and works trucks are in the all-vehicle figures further down.

All-vehicle totals, including vans, motorcycles and trailers, were 127,661 in 2021 and 131,032 in June 2026. The electric and hybrid counts for all vehicles are higher, because vans and motorcycles are included. The car-only figures on this page are the ones to compare with car finance.
What this means if you are buying an electric car
Fully electric cars pay no Vehicle Emissions Duty in Jersey, so the duty does not add to the amount you borrow. Hybrids and petrol cars do, and the band depends on the CO2 figure. The current duty rates run from £0 to £12,401 for the highest band, and the step between bands is large.
Electric cars are still a small share of the register. Compare the APR and total cost of an electric car loan with a petrol loan on the same terms, and check the car's CO2 band before you agree a price.
Use the car finance calculator to work out the monthly cost and the interest on the duty, if you add it to the loan.
Method, and what this cannot tell you
A car is counted when its category on the register is "Cars". Electric means the fuel is recorded as "Electric". Hybrid means "Hybrid Electric". Electric diesel and electric petrol (44 vehicles at June 2026) are left out of both, because the register does not say whether they are plug-in hybrids.
The register counts vehicles still registered in Jersey at the date of the snapshot. It does not show sales in the year, cars that left the island, or the age of the cars. An older car stays on the register until it is deregistered.
The published summary series counts every vehicle type. It shows 2,453 electric vehicles at the end of 2023, which includes vans and motorcycles. The car-only figure for the same date is 1,892. Both are correct for what they measure.
The end-June 2026 release was published as a spreadsheet, while earlier releases were CSV files. Figures for each snapshot were counted directly from the published files.

Looking for car finance
The register tells you what is on the road. It does not tell you what you will be offered. Lending depends on your income, credit history and residential status, and an enquiry through Bestloans.je involves no credit check.
