Car finance calculator for Jersey

This calculator works out the monthly payment, total interest and true APR of a car loan, hire purchase or PCP deal. It adds Jersey's Vehicle Emissions Duty, converts a dealer's flat rate into an APR, and checks whether refinancing an existing agreement would save you money.

It runs in your browser. Nothing you enter is sent or stored, and there is no credit check.

Flat rate to APR converter

A flat rate is simple interest on the full amount borrowed, for every year of the term, even though you repay part of it each month. Its APR is therefore close to double the flat figure. Six per cent flat over three years, for example, works out at about 11.7% APR.

Would refinancing your car save money?

Start with the settlement figure from your current lender, in writing. Jersey has no statutory early settlement rebate yet, so the figure depends on your agreement and can include a charge. Enter it as the balance, and put any charge or new arrangement fee under fees.

An APR quote against a flat-rate quote

A £18,000 car with a £3,000 deposit leaves £15,000 to borrow over 4 years. A bank quotes 9.9% APR: £376.68 a month and £3,081 of interest. A dealer quotes 5.5% flat, which sounds lower: £381.25 a month and £3,300 of interest. The flat-rate deal is 10.6% APR, so it costs £219 more.

Financing the duty on a high-emission car

The same car in the 176–200 g/km band pays £5,796 of Vehicle Emissions Duty, against £1,650 one band lower. Added to the 9.9% loan, the duty raises the payment to £522.24 a month and costs £1,190 in interest on top of the duty itself. Check the manufacturer's CO2 figure before you agree a price.

Refinancing: same term against a longer one

A £9,000 balance at 14.9% APR with 36 months left costs £307.47 a month. Moving it to 8.9% over the same 36 months, with £250 of fees, saves £582 overall. Stretching the new loan to 60 months cuts the payment to £184.89, but the total cost rises by £275. A lower payment is not the same as a cheaper loan.

How the calculator works, and what it leaves out

APR is treated as an annual rate compounded monthly, the definition used on UK and EU credit agreements. A flat rate is simple interest on the amount borrowed for the full term, spread equally across the payments. Flat-rate APRs are found by solving for the rate that makes the payments worth exactly the amount borrowed.

A balloon is a single payment due with the last instalment, as on a PCP. It lowers the monthly figure and is included in the total paid.

Fees are left out of the monthly calculator: arrangement, documentation, option-to-purchase and early settlement charges vary by lender. Ask for them in writing. Your actual rate depends on your circumstances, and the figures here are illustrations, not offers.

Vehicle Emissions Duty bands are the Government of Jersey's 2026 standard vehicle rates, payable once on first registration. Commercial vehicles have different rates. Check the current figure with Driver and Vehicle Standards before you buy.

Car finance calculator questions

A flat rate charges interest on the full amount borrowed for the whole term, so its APR is roughly double. A flat 6% over 3 years is 11.7% APR. Use the converter on this page for any rate and term, and ask the dealer for the APR in writing.

Yes, if you choose a CO2 band. Jersey charges VED once, when a car is first registered, and you can choose whether to pay it in cash or add it to the loan. Adding it means paying interest on it for the whole term, which the calculator shows separately.

No. The calculator runs entirely in your browser. Nothing you type is sent anywhere or stored, and no credit search is made.

Lenders add fees the calculator leaves out, such as arrangement, option-to-purchase and early settlement charges, and the rate you are offered depends on your circumstances. Compare the total amount payable on the written quote with the figure here.

It can be, if the new APR is lower and you keep the term the same or shorter. Stretching the term lowers the monthly payment but can raise the total cost. Jersey has no statutory early settlement rebate yet, so ask your current lender for a written settlement figure before you compare.

Turn the estimate into real quotes

The calculator tells you what a rate costs. It cannot tell you which rate a lender will offer you. That depends on your income, credit history, residential status and the car itself. An enquiry through Bestloans.je involves no credit check, and the team compares options from lenders across Jersey and Guernsey.
