You cannot set the rate a lender offers. You can change the cost of the loan, and often the rate, by what you do before you sign. The list below starts with the choices that move the total most.
All figures are worked examples using the car finance calculator. They are not quotes. Real rates depend on the lender, your circumstances and the car.
1. Compare APR, not the flat rate
A flat rate charges interest on the full amount for the whole term. A flat 5.5% over three years on £15,000 converts to about 10.7% APR. That is higher than the number on the page suggests. Ask every lender for the APR in writing, and compare that with the total amount payable.
2. Compare the total amount payable
A lower monthly figure is not the same as a cheaper loan. Over the same £15,000 at 9.9% APR, the 36-month deal costs £480 a month and £2,292 in interest. The 60-month deal costs £315 a month and £3,892 in interest. The monthly figure fell by £165, and the interest rose by £1,600.
3. Pick the shortest term you can afford
The term does more to the total than most people expect. The same £15,000 at 9.9% APR costs £2,292 in interest over 36 months and £3,081 over 48 months. Choose the shortest term that keeps the payment comfortable, and make sure the comfort holds if costs rise.
4. Put more down
A deposit or part-exchange lowers the amount borrowed. On a £15,000 car, a £2,000 deposit at 9.9% APR over 48 months costs £2,670 in interest. Borrowing £13,000 instead of £15,000 saves roughly £400 in interest on that term. Part-exchange equity counts as a deposit, so get the trade-in valued before you agree a price.
5. Check the emissions band before you agree the price
Vehicle Emissions Duty is paid once, on first registration in Jersey. The bands rise sharply. A car in the 176–200 g/km band pays £5,796 in duty. One band lower, at 151–175 g/km, pays £1,650. If the duty is added to the loan, you pay interest on it for the whole term. The 2026 rates are on gov.je.
6. Ask whether the dealer is paid commission on the finance
Ask the dealer in writing whether the lender pays commission, and whether it changes with the rate you are offered. The UK banned discretionary commission in 2021. That ban does not apply in Jersey, so a dealer's answer is worth having on paper. We cover the complaint route in our CIFO guide.
7. Get a second quote on a different type of loan
Hire purchase, PCP and a personal loan are structured differently, and a personal loan can be compared directly with a bank rate. Get a quote for each, on the same amount and term, before you decide. Our car finance guide sets out how the three differ.
8. Leave out add-ons you do not need
Extended warranties, GAP cover and paint protection are often financed with the car. Each one adds to the amount borrowed, and so to the interest. Ask for the price without them, then decide whether each one is worth paying for in cash or leaving out altogether.
9. Know what the PCP balloon really costs
On a PCP the monthly figure is lower because part of the price is deferred to a final payment. That final payment is still a debt if you want to keep the car. Add it to the monthly total before you compare, and work out the APR with the balloon included. A calculator that leaves the balloon out will understate the cost.
10. Keep the option to refinance
If your rate was high and your circumstances change, refinancing can cut the cost. Check the settlement figure from your lender first, and compare the total of carrying on with the total of switching. Jersey has no statutory early settlement rebate yet, so the figure depends on your agreement. The refinance guide walks through the sums.
What we cannot tell you
We do not set rates, and no lender has agreed to any figure in this guide. Our worked examples show the effect of each choice, not the rate you will be offered.
If you want quotes from more than one lender without a credit check to enquire, send an enquiry and the team will compare what is available. Before you accept any offer, check the APR, the total amount payable and the fees in writing.
