Electric Car Finance in Jersey: What Changes and What Doesn't

By the Best Loans Jersey Editorial Team

Electric cars are a small but growing part of Jersey's register. The government's count of cars rose from 992 electric cars in December 2021 to 3,409 by June 2026, which is 3.7% of the fleet. The finance itself works the same way as any other car. Two things change: the duty, and the price you should compare against.

The duty is zero, but check the car

Fully electric vehicles pay no Vehicle Emissions Duty when first registered in Jersey. The 2026 rates set a £0 band for fully electric cars, against £5,796 for the 176–200 g/km band on a petrol car.

That matters if you finance the duty. With a petrol car in a high band, the duty can add thousands to the loan and the interest on it. An electric car avoids that line completely.

Check the car is fully electric. Plug-in hybrids have a CO2 figure and fall into the normal duty bands. The register records "Electric" and "Hybrid Electric" separately, and the duty follows the CO2 figure, not the badge.

Imported cars still pay GST

If you buy an electric car from outside Jersey, GST at 5% applies to the import, the same as any other car. Any UK VAT paid counts towards the value you pay GST on, unless you can show it was refunded. Factor the GST into the price before you agree the finance.

Compare the same way as any car loan

Hire purchase, PCP and a personal loan work the same way for an electric car. The questions are the same:

  1. Compare the APR and the total amount payable, not the monthly figure. The car finance calculator does this on the same terms.
  2. Check the balloon on a PCP. The final payment depends on what the car is expected to be worth at the end. Ask how it is worked out, in writing.
  3. Ask what happens to the car if the lender changes. Read the agreement for who owns the car until the final payment.

We have not found evidence of lending products designed only for electric cars in Jersey. Do not assume a lender offers a better rate for an electric car. Compare offers on the same amount, term and deposit.

Before you sign

  • Get the price of the car with GST included, and the duty figure, if you are financing it.
  • Ask for the APR and total payable, in writing.
  • Check the CO2 figure on the car's documents, even if you expect it to be electric.
