A poor credit history does not mean you cannot get car finance in Jersey. It usually means you will pay more, or be offered less. The useful question is not whether you can borrow, but what the loan will cost in total, and whether you can afford the payments.
What lenders look at
Lenders are not able to see your full history from one place, so they will ask you for evidence. Expect them to look at:
- Your credit history. Missed payments, defaults and county court judgments on your file.
- Your income and outgoings. Whether the payment fits your budget after your other commitments.
- Your residential status. This decides what you can borrow at all. See our guide for new arrivals.
- Your deposit or part-exchange. A larger deposit lowers the amount at risk to the lender.
Jersey's consumer credit regime, expected to start in late 2026, will require lenders to assess affordability. That is a draft rule, and the start date is not fixed, but it means a lender should be checking whether you can afford the loan.
What can help
- A bigger deposit. Less borrowed means less interest, and sometimes a better rate. A £2,000 deposit on a £15,000 car at 9.9% APR over 48 months costs about £2,670 in interest. Borrowing £13,000 instead saves roughly £400 on that term.
- A cheaper car. The lower the amount, the lower the total. Check the emissions band too, because on petrol cars the duty can be large.
- A guarantor. Some lenders accept one. Ask whether the lender allows it, and whether the guarantor takes on the full debt if you miss payments.
- A shorter term, if you can afford it. A shorter term means higher monthly payments but less interest overall.
What to watch for
A high monthly payment can hide a very high total cost. Work the numbers with the car finance calculator, and check whether a rate is quoted as flat or APR. A flat rate looks lower than the APR it equals. For example, 6% flat over three years works out at about 11.7% APR.
Ask for the total amount payable in writing. If the total is far above the price of the car, look at a cheaper car or a smaller loan before you sign.
Do not take a loan you cannot afford because the offer seems easy. Missed payments carry their own costs, and a repossession can leave you owing more than the car is worth.
If it goes wrong
If you think a loan was mis-sold, complain to the lender first, in writing. If the lender does not resolve it within three months, the Channel Islands Financial Ombudsman can consider it. See our CIFO guide.
