Bike Loans in Jersey: Financing a Motorcycle or Scooter

By the Best Loans Jersey Editorial Team

Most motorcycles and scooters in Jersey are financed in one of two ways: hire purchase through the dealer or a finance company, or an unsecured personal loan that lets you buy the bike outright. The right choice depends on whether you want to own the bike from day one, how much deposit you have, and what the full on-the-road cost comes to once island duties are added.

This guide covers both routes, the Jersey-specific costs that belong in your budget, and how to compare the quotes you receive. If you would rather have someone gather those quotes for you, our bike loan enquiry is the place to start.

Hire purchase or a personal loan — which fits your bike?

Hire purchase (HP). You pay a deposit, then fixed monthly instalments. The lender owns the bike until the final payment clears, so you cannot sell it freely during the term. HP suits buyers who want predictable payments and are happy for the finance to be tied to the vehicle.

Personal loans. You borrow a cash sum and buy the bike yourself, from a dealer or a private seller. It is yours immediately. The rate you are offered depends heavily on your credit history and income, and because the loan is unsecured it is not tied to the bike's value.

Fleet finance. A business buying several scooters or delivery bikes is usually better served by a commercial facility than by stacking personal agreements.

The island costs to add before you set a loan size

The on-the-road figure is the one to finance, and in Jersey it includes several costs a UK price tag leaves out.

Vehicle Emissions Duty. VED is charged once, when the bike is first registered on the island. It is based on the manufacturer's CO2 emissions data, with cubic capacity used instead for machines produced before March 2001. Fully electric vehicles currently pay no VED, which is worth factoring in if you are weighing up an electric scooter.

GST on imports. Buying from outside Jersey brings GST at 5%, the rate that applies to most goods and services supplied for local use, including imports.

Inspections. Every motorcycle of 125cc and below, and every moped, registered in Jersey needs a periodic technical inspection every two years once it is three years old, currently at £35.50 a time. If you are financing a used small-capacity bike over several years, budget for at least one.

Then add insurance, kit, fuel or charging, and servicing. The loan repayment is only part of what the bike costs you each month.

How to compare the quotes you get

Put every offer side by side on the same terms:

  • APR and total amount payable. The monthly figure alone hides the difference between a short term and a long one.
  • Fees. Look for arrangement fees, option-to-purchase fees on HP, and annual administration charges.
  • Early settlement. Check what it costs to clear the balance early or make a lump-sum overpayment.
  • Specialism. A lender that regularly finances motorcycles will understand how bikes depreciate, which affects deposit and term.

It also helps to know where regulation stands. Jersey is bringing in a consumer credit regime that covers hire purchase, conditional sale and consumer credit agreements, along with broking and advice. Firms will register with the JFSC under a new class of business, with lower-risk activity supervised by Trading Standards and higher-risk activity by the JFSC. The government's published timetable targets commencement in late 2026, followed by a 12-month transition, so ask any lender or dealer how the new rules apply to them.

What to have ready when you enquire

Gather these before you apply and you avoid the usual back-and-forth:

  • Your driving licence and proof of Jersey address
  • Recent payslips or tax assessments
  • The bike's details and the on-the-road price, including VED
  • A clear idea of the deposit you can put down

Review your credit record ahead of time, too, so you can correct errors before a lender sees them. Enquiring through Bestloans.je involves no credit check: the team compares options from several lenders across Jersey and Guernsey and will call you back within one business day.
